Aimee Mann in Albany

Singer-songwriter Aimee Mann, a personal favorite of mine, will play a free show July 28 in Washington Square Park in Albany as part of this year's Mondays in the Park series. The entire series lineup has not been officially announced yet; although last year's run had great up-and-comers like Grace Potter & the Nocturnals and the Cat Empire.

You may remember Mann's work from both the movie Magnolia as well as strong tracks -- such as "That's Just What You Are," "Satellite," and "Driving Sideways" -- from her own albums. She initially got her start with '80s pop act 'Til Tuesday.

More Jam Faves at the Saranac

Robert Randolph & the Family Band will bring their powerful, hip-shakin' blend of gospel-tinged rock/soul to the Saranac Brewery in Utica on Friday, July 18. Tickets are only $22 in advance (or $26 the day of the show).

Then, later in the summer, the Dark Star Orchestra will appear Friday, Aug. 1. Again, tickets are only $22 in advance, $22 day of.

Both shows are general admission. They come on top of our earlier announcement about moe.'s two-night, four-set stand, June 13-14.

Looks like the Saranac is really developing into a jam niche in Central New York (sort of like our version of the Brown's Brewing Co.'s Revolution Hall in Troy), booking bands known for their excellent live performances. Way to go!

P.S. -- Robert Randolph, who's just about to kick off a tour opening for Eric Clapton, will also play the Empire Center in Albany on April 16. No ticket info yet, but we'll keep you posted!

Gin Blossoms Headline 10 Ugly Men Festival

This year marks the 19th anniversary of the "10 Ugly Men Festival" in Rochester. The aforementioned ugly men are a loose group of philanthropic-minded area residents who organize the festival and several other athletic tournaments each year in support of Rochester-area causes.

Interestingly, the $30 advance ticket price ($40 day of show) includes unlimited food and soft drinks, as well as six (!) tickets for beer and wine. $100 VIP tickets are also available, and include unlimited beer and wine, upgraded food choice, and (most important) private bathroom facilities.

Slope Day @ Cornell

For the last five or six years, Cornell's spring Slope Day celebrations have brought in some big-name acts to headline the festivities. This year finds the party hosting an act with a local connection -- Gym Class Heroes, who have their roots in nearby Geneva. The show is Friday, May 2, starting at 1:30 p.m. on the Cornell campus in Ithaca.

Opening the show are Hot Hot Heat and Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, both very decent, buzzworthy bands in their own right.

How do I get tickets, you ask? Aye, there's the rub. You have to be a Cornell student, be hooking up with one, or otherwise connected to score some $30 guest tickets.

CMAC Pre-Sale Thursday Morning

We told you a few days ago about CMAC's summer season announcement. Well, turns out that the password for the pre-sale is:

The tour marks their return from a three-year touring hiatus. Just in time for all those graduations ....

Most of these are shows on college campuses that may be restricted only to students. Sorry I don't have more specific info to share on individual concerts. All I can do is point you to their MySpace page.

Bruce Cockburn

Canadian folk-rock legend Bruce Cockburn will play Ithaca High School's Kulp Auditorium on May 17, along with fellow Canadienne Catherine MacLellan. The show is presented by OuttaSight Productions, who previously brought Cockburn to town in October 2004. (He'll also play Rochester's German House Theater two days later on the 19th.)

According to the Cockburn Project website, Bruce will be performing solo-acoustic, and all the shows will be recorded for release later this year of a solo-live album."

You can get tickets online here or in person at the Ticket Center at Clinton House, 116 N. Cayuga Street, 607-273-4497.

Crosby and Nash

David Crosby and Graham Nash (two-thirds of Crosby Stills & Nash) will play the State Theater in Ithaca on Monday, October 20, according to an e-mail blast they sent out today.

The duo will offers tickets through their personal ticketing site, though an on-sale date has not be revealed. No word on when the State will independently announce the show. We'll keep you updated!

Austin City Limits Finally Reveals Lineup

The Austin City Limits fest announced its 2008 lineup this morning. Must say it's a bit disappointing, compared to the last couple of years. (No Neil Young? No R.E.M.? And the Foo Fighters has top billing?!)

But there were some yummy surprises too: Beck, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, David Byrne, Neko Case, Against Me!, Vampire Weekend, Gogol Bordello, Conor Oberst, Alejandro Escovedo, and tons of others!

Say Anything at IC

Say Anything will play Sunday, April 27, at Ithaca College's Ben Light Gymnasium. The show is sponsored by the IC Bureau of Concerts. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.; showtime is at 7:00.

Tickets, which will be sold at the door (and online later this week) will be just $5 and the show benefits the Community School of Art and Music (CSMA) in Ithaca.

Area Gigs and Music News

O.A.R. has announced a new run, including an Aug. 10 date at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and Aug. 17 at Frontier Field in Rochester, according to Pollstar. Ozomatli opens. Any of you CU kids catch their show with Grace Potter & the Nocturnals at Barton Hall earlier this month?

Country star Dierks Bentley has added a June 20 date at the Dunn Tire Park in Buffalo to his summer roster, says Pollstar. Opening act is Rodney Atkins. (The park is the home of the Buffalo Bisons minor league baseball team, and has a seating capacity of over 18,000.)

Soul king extraordinaire Al Green is apparently putting out an album with ?uestlove of the Roots. Both bands are (separately) on the bill at the Rochester International Jazz Festival. Boz Scaggs, the John Scofield Trio, Devon Allman's Honeytribe, Soulive, Medeski Martin & Wood, Joe Bonamassa, the Nighthawks, and Cindy Blackman (longtime Lenny Kravitz drummer) are some of the other rock-related acts on the gargantuan lineup of more than 800+ acts.

Flight of the Conchords, the New Zealand duo behind the hit HBO series, will make a brief tour of the U.S. in late April and May. They aren't exactly hitting Ithaca, but you can catch them May 5 at the Tower Theater in Philly.

The Austin City Limits festival in Austin, Texas, announces its full lineup tomorrow morning. Who will it be?? Recent rumors have pegged everyone from Neil Young, Pearl Jam and Beck to more fantastical (and far-fetched) bands like Radiohead and Bruce Springsteen. Come on, people, the Boss does not "do" festivals. Usually?

And speaking of festivals, Bonnaroo (to be held June 13-15 in Manchester, Tenn.) has a surprise announcement of its own planned for this Thursday. Could Bob Lefsetz's rumors of a Zeppelin reunion, shot down by the promoters months ago, come true after all?

A June 28 show at Albany's Palace Theatre by 90s rocker Melissa Etheridge goes on sale Friday, May 9. She'll also do a two-night stand at the MSG Theatre in NYC July 9-10, followed by Reading, Pa. on July 15.

And Foxy Brown gets out the big house on Friday!

That's all for now ...
