Aimee Mann in Albany

Singer-songwriter Aimee Mann, a personal favorite of mine, will play a free show July 28 in Washington Square Park in Albany as part of this year's Mondays in the Park series. The entire series lineup has not been officially announced yet; although last year's run had great up-and-comers like Grace Potter & the Nocturnals and the Cat Empire.

You may remember Mann's work from both the movie Magnolia as well as strong tracks -- such as "That's Just What You Are," "Satellite," and "Driving Sideways" -- from her own albums. She initially got her start with '80s pop act 'Til Tuesday.

More Jam Faves at the Saranac

Robert Randolph & the Family Band will bring their powerful, hip-shakin' blend of gospel-tinged rock/soul to the Saranac Brewery in Utica on Friday, July 18. Tickets are only $22 in advance (or $26 the day of the show).

Then, later in the summer, the Dark Star Orchestra will appear Friday, Aug. 1. Again, tickets are only $22 in advance, $22 day of.

Both shows are general admission. They come on top of our earlier announcement about moe.'s two-night, four-set stand, June 13-14.

Looks like the Saranac is really developing into a jam niche in Central New York (sort of like our version of the Brown's Brewing Co.'s Revolution Hall in Troy), booking bands known for their excellent live performances. Way to go!

P.S. -- Robert Randolph, who's just about to kick off a tour opening for Eric Clapton, will also play the Empire Center in Albany on April 16. No ticket info yet, but we'll keep you posted!

Gin Blossoms Headline 10 Ugly Men Festival

This year marks the 19th anniversary of the "10 Ugly Men Festival" in Rochester. The aforementioned ugly men are a loose group of philanthropic-minded area residents who organize the festival and several other athletic tournaments each year in support of Rochester-area causes.

The Gin Blossoms headline this year's party, which will be held in Genesee Valley Park, on the banks of the river, just by the University of Rochester and Strong Memorial Hospital.

Interestingly, the $30 advance ticket price ($40 day of show) includes unlimited food and soft drinks, as well as six (!) tickets for beer and wine. $100 VIP tickets are also available, and include unlimited beer and wine, upgraded food choice, and (most important) private bathroom facilities.
